In Stock Opticron MM4 62 GA VHD 45deg Angled Travelscope Body
The Opticron MM4 62 GA VHD/45 packs a 62mm ED triplet objective and fully multi-coated VHD optical system into a body just 235mm long and 788g in weight. A 9:1 dual-speed wide wheel focuser delivers fast, precise focus, while NBR rubber armour and nitrogen waterproofing handle the weather. The 45° angled body and ±90° rotating tripod sleeve suit prolonged and shared viewing, and compatibility with HR2/HR3, HDF and SDL eyepieces takes magnification to 45x. Japanese made, body only, Premier+ warranty.
Combining everything that makes Opticron travelscopes the first choice for thousands of users worldwide, the MM4 62 GA VHD delivers on the maxim "smaller, lighter, brighter, sharper" , a supremely compact, versatile instrument built for accurate long-range observation on the move.
Designed and manufactured in Japan, the compact VHD optical system keeps the body to just 235mm (9.3") in length, while lightweight polycarbonate and aluminium alloy construction brings the weight down to 788g (27.8oz), roughly the same as a pair of 42mm binoculars. That makes it genuinely usable without a support at magnifications below 20x, delivering crystal-clear, flat-field observation handheld. Unlike binoculars, however, it will resolve stunning clarity and definition up to 45x when paired with an SDL or HR3 zoom eyepiece.
At the heart of the scope sits a 62mm ED triplet objective within a fully multi-coated optical system, producing high-contrast, colour-accurate images across the field. Fine adjustment comes via a wide wheel focuser with an accurate 9:1 dual-speed focus system, allowing rapid acquisition followed by precise final focus, with a close focus of 3.9m (12.8ft).
The 45° angled body is the natural choice for prolonged observation, digiscoping and shared viewing. It allows the tripod to sit lower and more stably, takes the strain out of scanning upwards for raptors or hillsides, and lets observers of differing heights share the same setup without constant readjustment. Paired with the large-footprint ±90° rotating tripod sleeve and standard 1/4" thread, you can rotate the body to whichever eyepiece position suits the terrain and your posture, without ever unmounting the scope.
Built for travel, the body is fully protected in soft-touch textured NBR rubber armour and is nitrogen gas filled and waterproof, so condensation and poor weather needn't cut a session short.
The MM4 62 is compatible with Opticron HR2/HR3, HDF and SDL eyepieces, so existing fieldscope owners can simply transfer their eyepiece across to an MM4 body. For general observation we recommend the SDLv4 15-45x (41280) or the HR3 16-48x (41145).
Supplied in body only format with an integrated rubber objective lens cover. Eyepiece sold separately.

Does this scope come with an eyepiece?
No. The MM4 62 GA VHD is supplied in body only format, with an integrated rubber objective lens cover as the sole included accessory. You will need to add an eyepiece separately.
Which eyepiece should I choose?
For general observation Opticron recommend the SDLv4 15-45x (41280) or the HR3 16-48x (41145). Both are zooms and both take the scope to its maximum useful magnification of 45x.
Will my existing eyepiece fit?
If it is an Opticron HR2, HR3, HDF or SDL eyepiece, yes. Existing fieldscope owners can transfer their eyepiece straight onto an MM4 body, which is one of the main reasons buyers choose the body only format.
What magnification does it give?
That depends entirely on the eyepiece fitted. With the recommended SDLv4 or HR3 zooms you have a range up to 45x. Below 20x the scope can be used handheld; above that a support is strongly advised.
Do I need a tripod?
Not necessarily. At magnifications below 20x the scope is light enough at 765g to be used without a support and still give crystal clear, flat-field images. For higher magnifications a tripod will make a noticeable difference to image steadiness. The base of the tripod sleeve carries a standard 1/4" thread, so it will fit any conventional tripod head.
Should I buy the angled or the straight body?
The angled body suits prolonged observation, scanning upwards, digiscoping and sharing a scope between people of different heights, as the tripod can sit lower and the viewing position is more relaxed. The straight body tends to suit those tracking fast-moving subjects or observing downhill. This listing is for the angled version.
How heavy is it and will it fit in a daypack?
It weighs 765g (27oz / 1.7lb) and measures 230 x 100 x 74mm, so it is about the same weight as a pair of 42mm binoculars and short enough to slip into a small rucksack.
Is it waterproof?
Yes. The body is nitrogen gas filled and fully waterproof, so it resists moisture ingress and will not fog internally with changes in temperature.
What is the closest it will focus?
3.9 metres (12.8 feet).
How good is the focusing?
The wide wheel focuser uses a 9:1 dual-speed system, giving you a fast action for finding your subject and a fine action for precise focus at higher magnifications, where depth of focus becomes very shallow.
What is the optical system?
A 62mm ED triplet objective within a fully multi-coated VHD optical system, using porro prisms that are themselves fully multi-coated. The scope is designed and manufactured in Japan.
Is a case included?
No. The scope is supplied body only with the integrated objective lens cover; cases and tripods are separate purchases.
What warranty does it carry?
The MM4 62 GA VHD is covered by Opticron's Premier Plus Limited Lifetime Warranty. Accidental damage and defects in parts or assembly are covered in full, including labour, for five years from purchase. For a further five years, defects in parts or assembly are covered for material costs, with labour charged. The warranty must be activated by registering the product with Opticron and is transferable to a new owner who re-registers with the original proof of purchase.
- Opticron 5 year Premier+ Warranty.
